A block of Lafayette’s South Street was closed Tuesday after a portion of the historic EM Weaver building at Five Points collapsed overnight. A contractor was brought in to stabilize the building after a segment of the outer wall fell into the street around 5 a.m.

Lafayette Fire Chief Richard Doyle says firefighters at a station across the street from the building heard the collapse.

Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission

Residents of a southwest side neighborhood took one last stand at Monday’s Lafayette City Council meeting, hoping to block a Habitat for Humanity subdivision.

Three women spoke in opposition – with one saying a house slated to be torn down belonged to her family in the past, while the other two focused on fire safety concerns that Lafayette Fire Chief Richard Doyle says aren’t a problem.

One of the detractors, Ann Miller, says she’s also concerned about the people who live in the houses.

Officials from fire departments throughout Tippecanoe County are teaming up to offer free smoke detectors to residents in need. The Historic Five Points Fire Museum also is involved in the project, with financial support coming from North Central Health Services.

Lafayette Fire Inspector Patrick Grimes says the grant totals more than $24,000. He says many homes in Tippecanoe County can benefit from multiple fire safety improvements.

The Lafayette School Corporation and the city’s fire department are partnering on a firefighter and EMT training program for high school juniors and seniors.

Students taking part would spend half their school day learning the necessary skills for such a career. Fire Chief Richard Doyle says a similar curriculum is offered at other Indiana high schools.

He says Ivy Tech is part of the effort too, allowing students to earn dual credits.
