When Crawfordsville State Representative Tim Brown was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident earlier this month, it caused many questions to come to the fore, even outside concern for his health.

But in the city he’s represented in the Indiana General Assembly for the last 24 years, who’s waiting in the wings if he’s unable to resume his position as a state lawmaker?

City of West Lafayette

This week on WBAA’s Ask The Mayor, we’re digging into West Lafayette’s growing pains. One of the city's roundabout projects just won an award, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t complaints. And, the city is gearing up for several more development projects both downtown and near the local airport. So how does a city maintain – or shape a new – identity when so much of the past has to be torn down?

West Lafayette officials say they are happy with the roundabout at Northwestern Avenue and Yeager Road.

City leaders held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the traffic circle Thursday morning.

Mayor John Dennis admits there have been some minor fender-benders and a few complaints, but overall, the intersection is working as planned. He says the roundabout is an ideal way to handle traffic in a city like West Lafayette.

Roundabouts planned for Lafayette

Pedestrian and traffic concerns may lead to two new roundabouts in Lafayette.

Planning is underway for projects at Twyckenham Boulevard and Old Romney Road, and Twyckenham and Poland Hill Road.

Transportation Engineer Carly Sheets says one reason for the roundabouts is making the area safer for pedestrians.

Currently, both intersections are four way stops.

Sheets says the cost is not yet known.

Phase one, which is the roundabout at Twyckenham and Poland Hill Road, is expected to start construction in the spring.

WL officials pleased with Northwestern roundabout

Motorists seem to be adjusting to West Lafayette’s newest roundabout with few problems.

The circular intersection on Northwestern Avenue at Yeager Road opened last week.

Public Utilities Director Dave Buck says for those still unsure about how to navigate the two-lane roundabout, there are detailed instructions available on the city’s website.

He says the traffic circle is handling the morning and afternoon rush hour as expected.

West Lafayette’s Public Works Director says the new roundabout at the intersection of Yeager Road and Northwestern Avenue is still a couple of weeks from completion.

Dave Buck says the two-lane traffic circle will be open in time for Purdue freshmen to arrive August 10th.

He says other roundabouts in the city are only one lane.

Buck says his staff will be available at the Sagamore West Farmer’s Market tomorrow afternoon to answer any questions people have.
