The Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission appears poised to approve new rules governing where self-storage facilities may be built and what happens inside of them.

The APC will consider a proposal at a meeting this week which would bar such facilities from being built on land currently zoned for agricultural use.

County Commissioner Tom Murtaugh helped spearhead the ordinance and says it comes out of a permit denial for land next to a creek on the far eastern edge of Lafayette.

For the second time this session, a bill stopping local communities from banning short-term rentals such as Airbnb failed to advance on the House floor.

White County is on its way to passing the state's first rule for protecting a waterway from big livestock farms. It's designed to shield the Tippecanoe River Basin and its residents from pollution and farm odors.

Proposed Indiana Wind Farm Stirs Opposition

A Texas-based corporation wants to build a wind farm in northwestern Henry County, but the plan is drawing opposition from some local residents.

The Calpine Corporation intends to build 80 to 100 turbines for a 200 megawatt wind farm. The proposed Big Blue River Wind Farm would include the townships of Greensboro, Jefferson, Harrison, and Prairie.

Henry County resident Susie Eichhorn opposes the plan.  

Her family owns a farm in the area, and Calpine Corporation wants to lease part of their property.

 West Lafayette residents objected after the Tippecanoe Area Plan Commission last week recommended approval of an apartment complex aimed at students to be built northwest of campus. However, the university’s plan to increase enrollment could mean more such battles are on the horizon.
