Tippecanoe County’s unofficial primary results were released Tuesday, after Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson said most of Indiana’s results could take several daysto be finalized.

Tippecanoe County Clerk Julie Roush says she estimates about 500 just-arrived absentee ballots still need to be added into the final tally -- a number she says could change the fate of some closer races with smaller vote numbers.

“It’s not definitive,” Roush says. “We know that these numbers are going to change. Even if it changed by one, it’s going to be unofficial until that day that we say it’s certified.”

Roush says she plans to have the additional ballots tallied by noon on Wednesday -- and she wasn’t expecting the counting process Tuesday to go so swiftly, given the additional work of scanning more absentee ballots than usual.

“I did not think we would get it done in a day and half,” Roush says. “But we did. We will.”

County residents voted after the COVID-19 pandemic upended the state’s primary, bumping the election to June and prompting the state to approve vote-by-mail balloting for Hoosiers concerned about staying safe from coronavirus.
