Lafayette retrofitting project moving forward

A home in Lafayette's Vinton neighborhood is undergoing a number of projects to make it more energy efficient.

It's part of a joint effort between the city and Purdue to encourage the community to take on similar work on their own homes.

Purdue Building Construction Management Assistant Professor Mark Shaurette says doing so can reduce energy costs by as much as 30-percent.

The work is funded through a $1-million grant from the U.S Department of Energy.

The home on Ulen Lane used about $270,000, the rest of the money will help low income families in the Vinton and Glen Acres neighborhoods do similar projects on their homes.

Once the model home is completed, the city will hold open houses for the community to see the work done there.
