Indiana students scored the same or better than the U.S. average on the math and English assessment known at nation's report card, released today.
The National Assessment of Educational Progress is the standard used to compare student achievement state to state. Unlike Indiana's own ISTEP -- this is a national test given to a sampling of students in all states and select urban areas.
So how did Indiana do? The numbers may look impressive, but Indiana's coordinator for the exam says there's no data to suggest student achievement is higher or lower than the 2013 exam.
Indiana ranked fourth in the nation in fourth-grade math -- the same as 2013. But for eighth-grade math Indiana is 11th -- that's a jump from 19th place two years ago.
For reading, Indiana ranked 10th for fourth-graders -- up 5 spots -- and 16th for eighth-grade -- up 11 spots.
