Lafayette Hearing Authority adds two homes to the city's unsafe structures list

The Lafayette Hearing Authority is adding two homes to the city’s list of unsafe structures.

Officials say the homes at 424 Central Avenue and 113 Walnut Street need to be demolished due to deteriorating foundations, shingles, siding and roofs.

Mayor Tony Roswarski says ordering the demolition of a home is a last resort, especially since the city usually ends up footing the bill.

He says in some cases the city is able to recoup the demolition cost by placing a lien on the property which is paid off when it’s sold.

Roswarski says other times the city has taken ownership of a piece of land and used it for a redevelopment project.
