Jul 23, 2019

Indiana To Fight Another Food Production Law

Dec 12, 2017

Indiana is leading 13 states in a lawsuit against Massachusetts over new food regulations. The law requires eggs, pork and veal sold in the Bay State to come from animals raised with room to lie down and turn around without touching an enclosure— it’s the second such lawsuit involving Indiana that’s been filed in the last two weeks.

Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill says the Massachusetts law— scheduled to go into effect in 2022— will cost farmers and raise consumer prices.

Influx Of Holiday Food Donations Always Welcome

Indiana’s food banks serve at least 1.1 million people every year and an increase of food donations and drives help pack the pantries.

Gleaners Food Bank CEO John Elliot says around this season people become more sensitive to the hunger issue.

“You know we’ve got a truckload of hams coming in from Smithfield,” Elliot says. “This is the season when everyone thinks about others in need.”

The cost of an Independence Day picnic’s worth of groceries continued to drop in Indiana this year, as part of a race to the bottom in the prices of competing food products.

The Indiana Farm Bureau tracks the cost of different sets of grocery items throughout the year. For July Fourth, it’s a 10-person barbecue – hot dogs, hamburgers and ribs, watermelon and other sides, plus drinks and condiments.

It all costs $51.50 this year, down 35 cents from last year and about 75 cents from 2014.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, or WIC, provides nutritional assistance and education to low-income mothers and children. Across the country, program participation is in steady decline.

According to the USDA’s economic research service, the number of monthly participants in the program fell 5-percent from 2013 to 2014, the largest decrease in the program’s 40-year history.

Indiana Grown

More than 200 producers have signed up to become members of the new Indiana Grown program, and Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann notes they span all of Indiana agriculture – everything from hardwood to poultry, produce to bath and body products.

State Department of Agriculture Director Ted McKinney says Indiana Grown encompasses all aspects of the food chain.

“It’s the retailers that have been pressing, pressing, pressing for this and I hope we’ve delivered a good product.  Same with restaurants,” McKinney says.

As the holidays begin, social service agencies that cater to the underprivileged are taxed.

At Lafayette’s Food Finders Food Bank, they’ve got plenty of baked goods, but are struggling to find enough meats to include in holiday care packages.

And, as WBAA’s Stan Jastrzebski reports, the organization is in the midst of transition – Executive Director Katy Bunder is looking for a larger, less out-of-the-way location into which Food Finders can move.
