The Hoosier Group: Indiana’s First Impressionists
Don’t miss the Hoosier Group: Indiana’s First Impressionists exhibition at the Haan Museum. It will make visitors understand why the Hoosier Group was among the most important groups of artists in the country at the turn of the twentieth century.
This very important exhibition will include iconic works by T. C. Steele, J Ottis Adams, Otto Stark, William Forsyth and R. B. Gruelle. While the five artists never formally organized as a group, they all celebrated the quiet beauty and everyday experiences of Indiana. They were known as the best representatives in the Midwest of what was then considered “modern art”.
Art critic Hamlin Garland referred to the artists as “The Hoosier Group” in his praises of their “Five Hoosier Painters” exhibition in Chicago, and their paintings were described as "a truly American expression within the modern idiom”.
Steele is still recognized as the most important Indiana artist, and the exhibition will feature twenty-one of his best works. Paintings of his children engaged in cultural pursuits give a glimpse of their lives.
Thanks to James R. Ross Fine Art for their support of this exhibition
