WL finalizing historic ordinance

West Lafayette is nearing completion of its Historic Neighborhoods Ordinance.

A 12 member group has worked on the document for about a year.

Director of Development Chandler Poole, who serves on the panel, says it’s about 95-percent finished.

He hopes to have the ordinance presented to the city council by the end of the year.

The city council created the historic commission last year with mixed support.

Those against the idea believe a historical preservation ordinance will take away individual property owner rights.

Commission members are promising to strike a balance between giving home owners freedom and keeping the city’s history intact.
