Road work plans in Lafayette approved

The City of Lafayette is moving forward with two major road projects. The Board of Works approved several contracts for improvements on Sagamore Parkway and the widening of Veterans Memorial Parkway.

The first phaseof the Sagamore project runs from north of McCarty Lane to south of Main Street.

Jeromy Grenard is an engineer with American Structurepoint, which is planning the work. He says it will involve the full reconstruction of that stretch of road.

“It also includes the addition of sidewalks on both sides, lighting and landscaping. We anticipate adding a westbound, right turn lane on McCarty Lane that is not currently there. We’re also anticipating adding a second set of left turn lanes at Main Street and at McCarty Lane.”

Construction on Sagamore Parkway likely won’t begin until 2014.

Veterans Memorial Parkway will be widened on its east end. The 1.7 mile stretch from Concord Road to U.S. 52 will be two lanes in each direction and include left turn lanes at two Wabash National property entrances.

Grenard says the project also will tie in with previous work in the area.

“We’re going to add a ten foot wide, paved, multi-use trail all the way from Osborne to U.S. 52. We’re also going to add an eight foot sidewalk from Daugherty Drive on Concord Road, south to Veterans Memorial Parkway, because that’s where the sidewalk ended on the last project.”

The city will put that work out to bid next month.
