WL creating State Street master plan

West Lafayette is moving forward with plans to revitalize the look of State Street.

The stretch of road from the Wabash River through the Purdue campus will become the responsibility of the city after the U.S. 231 Bypass opens.

Director of Development Chandler Poole says Indianapolis-based MKSK will develop the master plan for State Street. He says the firm has a good sense of the community and has worked with similar cities.

“College towns are different. We have different challenges. We’re very unique. We deal with the university, which operates a lot by its own rules,” Poole says. “Then you have the city, and (MKSK) understood that.”

Officials expect the discussions and planning will take six to nine months.

Poole says recommendations in the final plan will be implemented as improvements are made to the street and the final document will be realistic.

“To make it so restrictive that it’s financially impossible to pull it off would just be a waste of our efforts.”

He says the process will include input sessions with businesses, property owners and developers with a stake in State Street. It should get underway this fall.
