John Dillinger, the 1930s gangster and bank robber, was killed by the FBI in 1934 and supposedly buried in an Indianapolis cemetery.
Dillinger's relatives asked the Indiana State Department of Health permission to exhume the body from Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. In the request, Dillinger’s nephew and niece say they were presented with evidence to suggest the body is not actually his. Their request has been approved.
Susan Sutton of the Indiana Historical Society says getting to the coffin may a tough task.
“There was a cap of concrete and scrap iron poured over it, and then, on top of that, there are four large reinforced concrete slabs," she says.
The History Channel is taking part in the exhumation for an upcoming TV special. It is unknown when the exhumation will happen.
