Beacon Academy in West Lafayette is set to continue serving non-traditional students in the area.
Lafayette School Corporation board members voted to reauthorize sponsorship of the school’s charter for the next five years.
Superintendent Les Huddle says the academy is geared toward high-school-aged students in particular.
It'll give some LSC students an opportunity to continue their high school education that maybe ran into some trouble, made some bad choices, maybe have found themselves behind academically."
Huddle says the goal is to help these students finish high school in a timely manner.
LSC board members also approved a joint services agreement with the Tippecanoe and West Lafayette school corporations. Huddle says the three school systems will continue to operate under a special education cooperative known as Greater Lafayette Area Special Services (GLASS).
"We think that the services that GLASS provides for all three corporations really assist many, many students that need that extra help and support, and so we're glad that that's continuing."
Under the agreement, GLASS will continue using YWCA Greater Lafayette facilities to house its program.
In other board business, officials updated the LSC student handbooks for the upcoming school year. Those will be distributed to students and available online.
