Purdue's Cybersecurity Plan Poses Risk For Data Protection

Purdue University trustees voted Friday to adopt a larger insurance plan for cybersecurity risks.

This increase follows a risk assessment after this year’s launch of Purdue Global, which provides courses online for almost 30,000 students.

The current cybersecurity insurance plan was doubled from $10 million to $20 million, and may increase to $30 million by the end of 2019, due to the program’s functional reliance on the internet and online data sources. Purdue’s Domestic and Global Risk director Mark Kebert says increasing these resources allows for a more comprehensive approach to potential breaches.

"It could be somebody in our system that does something with our data that causes us not to be able to access our data," Kebert says. "There’s also coverage for notifications if we have a breach regarding personal data.”

Purdue libraries are also transferring larger quantities of research into online access points for its students, and as Purdue Global expands its presence, the university may have more security costs to consider.
