Downtown Frankfort Fire Spreads To Multiple Buildings

Investigators still don’t know the cause of a fire that engulfed two buildings, and threatened a third, on Frankfort’s courthouse square Tuesday morning.

“I don’t think they come any more serious than this,” says Frankfort Mayor Chris McBarnes.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at 9:30, and were still battling flames hours later. The fire began in a pet grooming business, then spread next door to a building containing a bar and several apartments. By noon, the goal was to keep a third adjacent building—which contains a clothing boutique, a hair salon, a karate studio, and a restaurant—from burning down.

“We thought we had it contained, but the wind was not our friend,” McBarnes says.

Frankfort Fire Department Chief John Kirby says 36 firefighters were on the scene, including off-duty members of the Frankfort force and members of the Lebanon Fire Department.

Frankfort firefighter Greg Miller fell through one story of a burning structure, and was transported to IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, where he remains in stable condition. There were no other injuries reported as a result of the fire.
