Activists Thursday protested the ongoing confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh as the next U.S. Supreme Court justice. They implored passersby in West Lafayette to call Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly and voice their disapproval. About a dozen people gathered to raise awareness of the policies they worry will follow Kavanaugh’s appointment.
Viviana Tsangaropoulous is a member of the Younger Women’s Task Force of Greater Lafayette.
“The main reason we are here, as our shirts say, is like protecting health care. Kavanaugh has been very adamant about eradicating the Affordable Care Act, and so we are very much against that,” Tsangaropoulous says. “We believe that people should have the right to healthcare if they need it.”
The coalition of students, faculty, and alumni is also concerned with the recent allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh. Chris Hegarty, a member of activist group Greater Lafayette Indivisible, was among those asking pedestrians to take part, asking, “Hey, do you have a minute to call Senator Donnelly in opposition to the Kavanaugh nomination?”
Thursday's protest is one of five scheduled statewide, with another slated for South Bend on Saturday.
