New recycling bins in WL

West Lafayette is stepping up its recycling efforts.

The city is paying for 48-gallon recycling bins which will be distributed in September or October.

Those are about three times the size of the current city-issued bins.

Public Works Director Dave Downey says the large devices are needed due to people recycling more.

He also says if people don’t have enough space to put their recyclables in the bin, they will throw it away.

Downey says that is counterproductive and the bigger bins help cut down on those incidents.

The new bins will cost the city about $236,000, which will be paid for through the general fund.
