At the annual Indiana Republican Party Fall Dinner, many members of the GOP paid tribute to retiring Senator Dan Coats.

Coats is not seeking re-election this year, after a career in politics that has included serving in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, as well as acting as a U.S. ambassador to Germany.

On behalf of Governor Mike Pence, Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb awarded Senator Coats and his wife Marsha Coats the highest award in Indiana, the Sagamore of the Wabash.

“In their own ways, they have both defined what it means to be a public servant, and what it means to serve Hoosiers,”  Holcomb says.

Coats spoke at the end of the dinner, and he took the time to express his gratitude for his family and years of service.

“I am so grateful that God gave me the privilege of public service of public service. The privilege of representing people in our state, representing our country overseas, the privilege of serving in both the House of Representatives and the United States Senate,” Coats says.

Republican Todd Young is facing off against Democrat Evan Bayh for Coats’ seat in the Senate.
