A local organization is giving Oakland High School $2,300 to make graduation extra special.

The Kiwanis Club of Lafayette-Harrison raised the money, with the help of students, through a BBQ chicken and bake sale.

It will help pay for the ceremony and sit down dinner planned for the graduates and their families.

This is the first group of students accepting their diploma from Oakland and principal Clare Lutgen says it’s important to make it memorable.

Nine students are part of the inaugural graduating class.

The ceremony will be held at Duncan Hall in Lafayette June 1st.

Oakland opened last fall to cater to students who struggled in a traditional school setting.

Kiwanis Club of Lafayette-Harrison President Marjorie Steinsays the achievement of graduating is particularly special for this group of Oakland students.
