Book Cycle program encourages love of reading

More than 300 Tippecanoe County children a month are developing a love of reading thanks to a volunteer effort.

Book Cycle serves low-income families in eight area child care centers.

Spokesperson Colleen Reader says each week volunteers visit the sites, read to the children one-on-one, and help them select two books to take home.

She says when they tire of those books, the children can exchange them for new ones.

Reader says Book Cycle began in 2002, with an anonymous donation of 500-dollars to purchase books.

She says it now takes close to $6,000 a year to run the program.

Funding comes from grants and private donations.
