Bonds approved for Metronet project

A fiber-to-premises network in Lafayette and Tippecanoe County is a go.

The Lafayette Redevelopment Commission signed off on $6.5-million in bonds for MetroNet to move forward with the project.

Company spokesperson Steve Biggerstaff says issuing the bonds sends a strong message to investors.

“There is a lot of places you can invest.  So you look at communities that you think you can form a good partnership with, where you both can grow and provide a valuable infrastructure," he said.  "The willingness on the part of the community to do that with us is huge.”

He says work on the project has been delayed due to Hurricane Sandy.

The company sent some crews out east to assist in the recovery effort.

"We had eight contractor crews working for Duke Energy doing the make ready in Franklin and they were going to start moving up here," he said, "when Sandy hit over the weekend, that Saturday, when it started to hit, the decision was made.  We all have to pitch in."

Biggerstaff says that has pushed back the start date about a month and expects work to begin in January.

The $60-million project also includes West Lafayette, but it still needs approval from the city council and redevelopment commission there.
