TSC adding onto Burnett Creek Elementary

Burnett Creek Elementary is expected to have 30% more students next fall. The growth comes from a boundary change affecting the school and Klondike Elementary.

The district board is moving forward with a plan to add a wing onto the Burnett Creek building.

Superintendent Scott Hanback says that will allow enrollment to grow by another 150 students in the coming years.

“One of the intermediate steps we need to take this year – we’re going to have to relocate some portable classrooms. Burnett Creek already has two. We’re going to bring four more portables on property this summer.”

He says enrollment next fall is expected to be about 600 students.

Planning will continue this year with construction starting next summer. The new wing should be ready for the fall of 2015.

“With the wing addition, that will increase the capacity at Burnett Creek to 750 going forward,” Hanback says. “That’s a good number, a good size for a school. We wouldn’t want to go any larger than that.”

The estimated cost of the project is about $8 million.
