Delphi School Board Holding Special Meeting Monday To Address Superintendent, Loan

Delphi Community School Corporation

The paid administrative leave of Delphi Community School Corporation Superintendent Greg Briles – and an update on the corporation’s finances -- are on the agenda for a special school board meeting Monday.

School board president Neal Anderson confirms he and the school corporation’s lawyer, Nick Otis, notified Briles of his leave immediately following an Aug. 19 meeting. He says the board plans to hire an interim superintendent Monday.

Anderson says he’s also looking forward to a presentation from Ed Eiler, a former Lafayette School Corporation Superintendent brought in to examine the corporation's full financial picture.

“I’m not here to put the blame on anybody, because I don’t know yet," Anderson says. "I don’t know enough yet. That’s why we have him.”

Agendas from earlier this year show a back-and-forth between board members about best financial practices—including a narrow decision in July to cap the superintendent’s spending limit without prior board approval at $5,000 instead of $50,000. Anderson says board members differ on what the district’s spending priorities should be, adding matters, in his words, “came to a head” at the Aug. 19 meeting when a $1.5 million emergency loan was approved.

You know, I feel bad for everybody here—I really do," Anderson says. "Nobody wants to be sitting in the situation we’re in right now. Not that it’s the end of the world—like I said, we’re going to come out of this.”

Monday’s meeting will take place at 7 p.m in the Delphi Community High School Little Theater.
