Indiana wine wins competition at Purdue

A winery from New Albany won the top prize at the annual Indy International Wine Competition at Purdue.

River City Winery’s 2011 Vignoles earned the distinction of “Wine of the Year,” besting about 2,400 other entries.

It marks the first time an Indiana wine has won the award in the contest’s 21 years.

The winery also won in the best French-American category.

More than 360 Hoosier entries were given medals.  That includes 22 double gold and 26 golds.

Indiana wines also won 110 silver and 76 bronze medals.

Wildcat Creek Winery of Lafayette earned the Indiana-Made Traminette of the Year and the Indiana-Grown American Wine of the Year for their Steuben.
