Hanna Community Center's Ebony and Ivory Ball

The annual Ebony and Ivory Ball has helped fund a Lafayette organization for three decades. The 30th annual event benefiting the Hanna Community Center is this Saturday, January 26.

Executive Director Heather Maddox says they don’t give out any awards and there’s no keynote speaker, but the event does raise money to keep their services going.

“It’s just a fun night – dinner, dancing, a silent auction,” she says. “We give a little bit about what we do, but otherwise, it’s a night for everyone to get together, socialize and have a good time.”

Hanna Center offers a summer camp and after school program for children, as well as a wellness program and low-cost lunch for senior citizens.

Maddox says one of her goals as the new executive director is to get the organization in better financial shape.

“We went through a tough year with some restructuring,” she says. “We had a big cut in our United Way (funding) over the past couple years. We got a little of it back for 2013, but there was a point this summer where we were really struggling.”

She says they’ve cut back in staffing and some of the things they do. Still, another goal is to expand on the programs and services offered at the Center.

“For parents and some of the others, we’d like to add some financial literacy (programs),” Maddox says. “We’re not talking about mortgages. We’re talking about the basics.”

Tuesday is the last day tickets for the Ebony and Ivory Ball will be on sale. You can find more HERE.
