Map the Meal Gap

A new study is mapping those at risk of hunger.

Map the Meal Gap comes from Feeding America and estimates the rate of food insecurity for a county’s general population and for children. The data from the Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics is from 2011.

In the area Food Finders Food Bank serves, roughly 85,500 people don’t always know where they’ll find their next meal. Of that, nearly 30,000 are children. Statewide, that number is about 1,064,000 people.

The report finds that more than $33 million dollars would be needed to provide food for those individuals in mid-north Indiana to have an adequate diet. To feed all Hoosiers, the amount is $404 million.
