Hunger Hike falls short of $90K goal

The director of the Lafayette Urban Ministry says there is good news and bad news when it comes to this year’s Hunger Hike.

Joe Micon says the event drew the second largest number of participants in its history.

But he says the fundraising fell short of the goal by $30,000.

The money raised during Hunger Hike is split evenly between LUM, Food Finders Food Bank, and the St. Thomas Aquinas Haiti ministry.

Micon says missing the target would have serious consequences for food insecure people in Tippecanoe and surrounding counties.

He says the funding shortfall would also mean fewer water purification systems for people in Haiti.

Micon says organizers will be approaching hikers and corporate sponsors to help make up the difference.

He says the deadline to meet the Hunger Hike goal has been extended until December 1st.
