The release of new census information means the City of Lafayette has to redraw its council districts.
Council members reviewed a newly drawn map during a special meeting Wednesday.
At-Large councilor Steve Meyer says they have several goals in mind, including equal population across districts.
"We also wanted to make sure that, as much as possible, the districts do not include split precincts, because that could lead [to] some confusion to the voters if they lived in Wea 4 but half of them have to vote in one district and half the other."
The proposed map tweaks the city’s southernmost region, which Meyer says has grown in population since districts were last established.
"Currently our southern district, which is District 1, had too many people in it, because in the last 10 years it's grown in population. So we've had to shift some of the other districts down south in order to alleviate that problem."
He says the plan should come before the council in September, after a pending annexation is finalized.
Indiana code requires the city to redraw districts based on new census information by the end of the year.
