WL delays redistricting vote

West Lafayette is going to take another month to restructure its district maps.

Federal law requires the city to finalize them by the end of the year.

An initial vote was scheduled for Monday night, but council members agreed to table a decision to allow more time to make sure the districts are done equally and properly.

Councilor Eddie VanBogaert is part of the group working on the maps.

He says will be similar to the ones presented to residents in March, but wants to make sure they are done as best as possible.

“Ultimately our goal is to work on one person - one vote and to get those districts as close to parity as possible," said VanBogaert.  "State code says we have to be within ten percent variance, I want to strive to be even better than that to make sure we are as close as we possibly can.”

Councilor Vicki Burch is offering two proposals of her own.

One includes moving from five to four districts and allowing three at-large seats on the council.

"I think that would be especially important for (Purdue) students, because they will have an extra vote" said Burch. "They will still have their district representative, but they will have three at large, plus the mayor, so that's an extra vote for the students."

The council is scheduled to take a vote on the new district maps at its December 3rd meeting.
