FSSA announces information breach

The private personal information of nearly 190,000 Hoosiers may have been compromised by the state’s Family and Social Services Administration.

A computer error by a private contractor used by FSSA resulted in documents containing private information about FSSA clients to be sent to other clients.  The potentially-leaked information includes names, addresses, birth dates, FSSA case numbers and types of benefits received.  As many as 4,000 social security numbers may have been disclosed.

The breaches occurred between April 6 and May 21.  FSSA is notifying the more than 187,000 potentially-impacted clients, warning them to protect against identity theft.

In a statement, FSSA Secretary Debra Minott says her agency does not believe there was a widespread leak of information.  Still, the agency is notifying everyone who may have been affected.  And it’s asking anyone who received another client’s information to either return it to FSSA or shred it.
