A couple of towns and a city in West Central Indiana are among a majority of Indiana municipalities focusing the most recent round of Community Development Block Grant funding on water system improvements.
The Town of Oxford, in Benton County, is focusing its funding on a stormwater program to prevent flooding in residential areas.
The state granted $500,000 each to Oxford and the Cass County town of Royal Center, as well as $550,000 to Attica.
Attica clerk Susan Stoll says her city sought more than half-a-million dollars in grants to update its wastewater treatment plant, so that it would to keep up with Indiana Department of Environmental Management rules.
“Right now, our systems, we can’t properly test for a lot of the things they’re asking us to do in the future and also, we can’t have any discharges into the Wabash,” Stoll says.
She says the city’s plant will add a retention area so it doesn’t leak into the Wabash River.
The Cass County town of Royal Center is undertaking a similar project, while the town of Oxford, in Benton County wants to improve its stormwater treatment systems to curb flooding.
The majority of municipalities that received the most recent round of Community Development Block Grants focused on water-related projects.
