West Lafayette Mask Mandate To Remain In Place “Until Further Notice”

WIth Indiana lifting its statewide mask mandate on Tuesday, local officials are making decisions about how to proceed, as the number of COVID-19 cases trends upwards across the state.

The question of a timeline came up at the West Lafayette City council meeting on Monday.

City Council President Peter Bunder asked Mayor John Dennis about the future of the city’s mask mandate on Monday.

“I’m almost afraid to ask,” Bunder said. “But can you say anything about masks?”

“My intention is to hold the mask ordinance at least for another month and then see how things go,” Mayor Dennis replied.

City Councilmember Nick DeBoer said it would be worth considering what kind of numbers the city wants to see before it removes the ordinance.

“Some hard numbers in place we can communicate with the public so we can say look the end is in sight, this is what we need to achieve to get there, and here’s the gap and it’ll be soon enough,” he said.

The city council also made a tentative agreement to meet in person on May 3rd.

In Lafayette, city officials have announced that masks will be required at the city hall for at least the next two weeks. Citywide the mask mandate will lift along with the rest of the state.
