Rezoning of former airport moving forward

A proposed rezone for part of the former Aretz Airport in Lafayette is moving forward with approval from Tippecanoe County officials.

The Area Plan Commission approved a request to rezone the western half the property as General Business. The nearly 11 acre site northeast of the State Road 25 and Interstate 65 intersection is currently zoned Residential and Agricultural.

APC Executive Director Sallie Fahey says the General Business designation is closer to what her staff would like to see at the airfield.

"From a staff perspective, probably business zoning of some sort. I think we'd probably prefer highway business. We think is appropriate but not until there's sanitary sewer available."

She says eventually APC staff would like to see such things as gas stations, restaurants, or hotels at the location.

If the zoning resolution gets final approval, it’s likely the building contracting business currently there will remain. The Tippecanoe County Commissioners will consider the rezoning request next month.
