The Tippecanoe School Corporation is promoting cleaner transportation.
The district purchased five alternative fuel buses that use the latest propane technology, including a liquid propane autogas fuel system.
TSC Transportation Director Kevin Neafie says the long term cost savings is the biggest advantage of the new vehicles.
Currently, propane powered vehicles cost about two dollars less per gallon to fill up than those requiring diesel.
The buses were purchased with the help of a nearly $53,000 grant from Indiana’s Office of Energy Development, as well as donations from local businesses.
Each can hold 78-passengers.
Neafie hopes to start using the buses by the end of the school year. If the permits are not complete by then, he says they will begin operating for summer school.
