Indiana to change way schools are graded

Indiana’s superintendent of public instruction says the new method of assessing a school’s performance will address both performance and growth.

Glenda Ritz says an A-through-F letter grade will be assigned based on students’ performance on the I-STEP, along with improvement or decline in scores relative to statewide peer institutions.

She says if a school shows progress despite poor overall scores, that's a sign the school is moving in the right direction.

Ritz says she'll be working on a formula for combining the achievement and improvement measures into the required single grade.

The new rules are due by November 15th.
