Local literacy program expanding

As the local literacy effort Read to Succeed enters its third year, coordinators are looking for an additional 100 volunteers.

Team Leader Gary Henriott says the extra help is needed to expand from 11 to 15 elementary schools.

He says volunteers spend one hour a week in the classroom helping kids improve their reading skills.

Henriott says statistics kept by the Lafayette School Corporation show that 11-percent of students in schools who participated in the program last academic year improved their scores on the I-Read standardized test.

He says by comparison, students in schools without Read to Succeed only showed a gain of about point-six percent.
