US Navy wants to name new ship USS Indianapolis

The Navy is naming one of its new ships the U.S.S. Indianapolis. It’s a littoral combat ship (LCS), designed for action close to shore. That includes dealing with such threats as mines, submarines and surface warfare.

Congressional approval and funding is still needed.

A submarine and two other ships have been named Indianapolis, the best known one being the World War II cruiser sunk by the Japanese in July, 1945. That was the greatest single loss of life at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy.

The ship will be 388 feet long, have a waterline beam length of 58 feet and make speeds in excess of 40 knots. The construction will be led by a Lockheed Martin industry team in Marinette, Wisconsin.
