Closing date for area homeless shelter put off until 2015

Plans to close a local day shelter for the homeless are being delayed.

Mental Health America announced last week it would shut down its facility on Columbia Street by September 1st of this year due to a lack of funding.

But CEO Jennifer Flora says an outpouring of concern has led to a postponement of the closing to June 30th of next year.

She says that will allow time for discussions about the best way to meet the needs of the area’s homeless.

In 2013, the shelter served 792 individuals.

It is the only day shelter for the homeless operating in Greater Lafayette.
