Summer Food Programs Start Statewide

Summer meal programs are getting underway in 194 Indiana cities.

The programs are designed to ensure kids can get a nutritious breakfast and lunch over the summer when school lunch programs aren‘t operating.

Feeding Indiana‘s Hungry executive director Emily Bryant says participation in the program went up by nearly one-fourth last year.

"The USDA made a real concerted effort last summer to make sure families were aware of the summer nutrition programs, that non-profits and schools were engaged to provide feeding sites. Just to make sure kids were being served," Bryant says.

There are eight summer food sites in Lafayette, three in Crawfordsville, nine in Frankfort and three in Monticello.
