Indiana Family and Social Services Administration officials say they’re working to recoup Medicaid dollars that were inappropriately distributed to dentists in the state.

A federal report released today shows 94 pediatric dentists were paid too much for their services in 2012.

The report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services does not indicate exactly how much the dentists were overpaid. It only says they were paid a total of more than 30 million dollars in 2012…but individual cases show some dentists billed Medicaid about twice as much as they should have for certain services and other dentists reported seeing a suspiciously high number of Medicaid patients each day.

In a statement a Family and Social Services Administration spokeswoman says the FSSA implemented a system to scrutinize Medicaid claims in 2011 and, since then, the state has recouped 324 thousand dollars from dental providers.

The federal report acknowledges the individuals under investigation do not represent the vast majority of dentists in Indiana and it points out the majority of them came from four dental chains.

The report did not name the dentists or the companies.
