Leadership changes are expected at the Indiana BMV.

Commissioner Kent Abernathy is making plans for fixes and another round of refunds after a report detailed serious problems within the agency.

He says the agency found Hoosiers were overcharged on as many as 16 fees, but the scope of that problem won‘t be known until the end of June at the earliest.

"It was a mistake. It was something that happened. It was something that was unintentional but it did happen," says Abernathy. "We need, to the degree possible, to make right those people that were overcharged."

Abernathy says the agency also found people underpaid on possibly 10 separate fees.

The recent independent report also raised questions about the software the agency uses to set prices and collect money, suggesting it was time for an upgrade in order to avoid errors with future bills.

The commissioner says he’s already working with state lawmakers to begin the fixes.
