The space now occupied by the Purdue Latino Cultural Center is slated to become a fraternity parking lot.
Purdue Research Foundation officials say Purdue’s Phi Gamma Delta chapter purchased the land the LCC occupies and plans to expand into the lot.
The LCC will be forced to relocate to a smaller house a couple blocks closer to campus academic buildings early next semester.
Interim Director David Robledo says the university is planning to add rooms to the LCC’s new home, but it’s difficult to leave the decade of memories at the current location.
“It’s going to be hard in the sense that there’s a lot of emotional history here with the students and the staff and faculty that have used this location,” Robledo says.
And he says while it’s closer to the core of campus, whether the center will have the same resources is unclear.
“It’s not going to be exactly the same and we can’t expect it to be the same,” Robledo says. “So, we need to be creative in using it to its full advantage.”
The LCC’s current space offers a library, kitchen, lounge, computer lab and study rooms.
Renovations of the new house are scheduled to be complete next May. The current center will be torn down and the parking lot put in its place sometime within the next two years.
