Lafayette department seeks new space

The City of Lafayette is looking for a new location to house several departments and services.

Street and Sanitation Commissioner Dan Crowell says they’ve run out of space at the current site on south 3rd Street.

He says the building is more than 50 years old, does not have the proper drainage system, and is inefficient.

"For the past year to a year and a half, we've been trying to locate a new place to move the Street Department. We haven't really found any place solid yet, where we want to move it. But our ultimate goal is to move Street and Sanitation, Traffic, Parks central maintenance, possibly the brush dump too. We have to find a place big enough to house all this stuff."

Crowell  says the main objective is to store trucks and equipment under one roof, because everything should be kept inside during the winter.

He says there’s no timeline for moving to a new location, which he thinks needs to be about 10 to 12 acres.

"Ideally, to put all this in one spot. We've looked at a couple places, but we don't have anything definite yet. We'd like to be centrally located, but if we have to be on the edge of the city, that would work too. If anyone has any idea, we'd like to hear it."
