Tippecanoe Co could help WL with road project

United Consulting

Tippecanoe County receives approximately $500,000 each year through the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). That gives local entities money necessary to make roads, intersections and other transportation features less dangerous.

Area Plan Commission Executive Director Sallie Fahey says the funds could be used to put in a roundabout at the intersection of Happy Hollow and River roads.

"It is, at a minimum, 90% funded federally and 10% local - other than the normal 80-20 (split). And there are some situations where you can use HSIP money to fund 100% of the project."

West Lafayette is preparing to reconstruct Happy Hollow Road with new pavement, curbs and gutters, and a biking-walking path. The city’s plans do not include a roundabout at River Road, but Fahey says officials are considering one.
