Delphi School Board Proceeds With Superintendent Termination

Delphi Community School Corporation

UPDATE (8:00 p.m.):

Otis says no specific date has been set for a hearing, and that Briles merely has the option of requesting one, which he has yet to formally do.

EARLIER:

The Delphi Community School Corporation board has moved to fire Superintendent Greg Briles.

Briles was placed on paid administrative leave last month, on the same day the board approved a request for a $1.5 million dollar emergency loan. At a subsequent board meeting, corporation attorney Nick Otis said the school board needed to determine why an emergency loan became necessary.

Officials have stressed no corporation funds have been misused, saying the timing of the issues tied their hands financially. But they also noted Briles effectively served as the corporation’s chief financial officer and was in charge of overseeing district spending.

The board will consider the contract termination at an October 14 meeting. Briles may request a hearing prior to that date to discuss the circumstances surrounding his dismissal.

School board members did not respond to requests for comment. Board president Neal Anderson referred all questions to Otis, who also did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been edited to reflect a change to the timeline for dismissal. An earlier version suggested Briles had requested a hearing. He has the option to do so, but as of the day of original publication had not made such a request.
