Congress is in the process of trying to reauthorize a program designed to reduce the fatalities, injuries, and property losses caused by earthquakes.

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education wants to help college students finish their degrees on time, unveiling Monday its ’15 to Finish’ campaign. 

Tthe initiative is a coordinated, statewide effort to inform students, parents, and advisors about the importance of taking 15 credit hours per semester.

Only 30-percent of Hoosiers complete a bachelor’s degree on time.  And an extra year of college costs an average of $50,000 . 

Purdue Device Could Standardize Test For Pacemakers

Cardiac surgeons could use a Purdue invention to standardize a test that determines if a pacemaker is implanted securely.

Purdue Expert Predicts Beef Prices Will Decrease Slightly

A Purdue Agricultural Economics Professor says we may see the cost of beef come down slightly by the end of summer.

Dr. Christopher Hurt says April beef prices rose to about $5.87 per pound.

That’s up 11.1% from April 2013.

Hurt says the average beef price for 2104 is up to $5.70 per pound this year compared to $5.30 per pound last year.

By fall, Hurt says beef prices may be back to $5.70 by the fall.

He says higher feed prices and drought in the Central and Southern Plains are reasons for higher beef prices.

Purdue Vice Provost Leaving For Position at UCF

Purdue’s vice provost is leaving the university.

Dale Whittaker has been named provost of the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

He begins his new role August 1st.

Whittaker came to Purdue in 2002 as associate dean and director of academic programs in the College of Agriculture.

In 2010, he became vice provost for undergraduate academic affairs and since December has served as acting vice president for student affairs.

Whittaker was selected from a pool of 60 candidates for the Florida job.

Purdue Expert Predicts Higher Gas Prices This Summer

A Purdue economist predicts gas prices will be a bit higher this summer compared to a year ago.

Wally Tyner says the cost for a gallon of regular unleaded could be as much as $3.90 a gallon.

He anticipates a decline in gasoline consumption along with an increase in refining capacity in the United States.

But Tyner says even as the U.S. uses less gas, countries like China and India are using more.

And he cautions that prices could go higher over short periods if supplies are disrupted anywhere in the system.

Purdue jet makes historic flight

Purdue continues its efforts to develop a practical biofuel for jet engines.

Over the weekend the university’s Embraer Phenom 100 made a historic flight to the the Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture in Wisconsin.

One of the aircraft’s engines was powered by traditional jet aviation fuel.

The other contained a biofuel blend prepared by the U.S. Air Force.

University officials say it’s the first time a university-owned jet has flown using biofuel.

Purdue hosts Earth Day activities

Purdue's Earth Day activities today (Mon) will feature exhibits, games and demonstrations along with campus and community project presentations.

The activities will conclude with a lecture by retired U.S. Marines Colonel Mark Mykleby.

Mykleby served as special strategic assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from July 2009 to April 2011.

His talk, titled "Sustainability: Our National Strategic Initiative," is set for 5:30 in Forney Hall of Chemical Engineering.

Purdue to host 2nd annual Research Roundtable

Purdue students looking for research opportunities could be paired with existing projects at an upcoming event.

The university’s Engineering Honor Society and Society of Professional Engineers are collaborating on the second annual “Research Roundtable.”

Ryan Hom is one of the organizers and says this year’s event is bigger and more diverse.

He says students should bring business cards, resumes, and anything else they want to show to researchers.

The event is set for tomorrow morning in the Purdue Memorial Union’s North Ballroom.

Cordova delivers 'Last Lecture'

Purdue’s president is starting to say goodbye to the university community.

France Cordova delivered her “Last Lecture” Tuesday night at Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center.

She talked to a crowd of mostly students about her rise to the position and goals after she steps down in July.

Cordova believes she will leave the university in a better position than when she took over five years ago.

She says the most challenging part of her presidency was managing the school during the height of the economic recession.

Purdue Dedicates Marriot Hall

Purdue officially dedicated a new $13-million facility on its West Lafayette campus.

The university held a ceremony today Tuesday for Marriot Hall, which houses the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

The building was constructed with help of a nearly $5-million gift from the Marriot Foundation.

Bill Marriot says the facility gives students a hands-on experience and serves as a starting point for their careers.

The 40,000-square-foot building is on State Street.
