Unemployment rate improves for state in October

The private sector added 7,700 new jobs in Indiana last month. That growth is the largest monthly jobs gain since May. It also drops the state’s unemployment rate to 8%, down 0.2% from September.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development reports private sector employment is roughly 96% of what it was in 2007 before the recession.

Locally, unemployment increased 0.1% in Lafayette and West Lafayette to 7.1% and 4.7%, respectively.

Tippecanoe and surrounding counties showed mostly positive employment signs for October. The percentage of people looking for work either declined or held steady from September in all but one county.

White County’s rate climbed just a fraction, but it’s still lower than most in the region. Tippecanoe and Clinton counties’ unemployment went unchanged. The biggest decline was in Carroll County at 0.4% to a rate of 6.4% for October.
