A literacy effort in Tippecanoe County is closer to recruiting enough volunteers to fulfill its expansion plans.
Read to Succeed has recruited 460 people to help kindergarten through 3rd grade students improve their reading skills. Organizers say they still need 55 more people to volunteer one hour a week, or to team with a friend or coworker to share the time commitment.
They say the needs are the greatest in the Tippecanoe School Corporation – specifically Wea Ridge and Wyandotte elementary schools.
A study of the last school year shows students who received extra help made significant gains on the state’s reading test.
