The feeding frenzy sure to follow the announcement of a U.S. Senate seat coming open in Indiana commenced in earnest Wednesday, with a bevy of current and former politicians saying they’re considering trying to replace Dan Coats (R-IN).
Rep. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis), who toyed with running for Indy mayor before deciding against it, now says he thinks his platform may be better suited for an even higher office.
Sen. Mike Delph (R-Carmel) also joined the chorus of GOP lawmakers issuing statements thanking Coats for his service – except he spent one paragraph on the senator’s accomplishments and four on why he might make a good replacement, all without saying for sure that he’ll run.
Coats Chief of Staff and former state party chairman Eric Holcomb has scheduled a press conference for Thursday, where he may announce his candidacy.
Rep. Christina Hale (D-Indianapolis) and former Congressman Baron Hill (D-9th) have indicated they may seek to oppose whomever the Republicans nominate.
